Trace Elliot V8 The Behemoth Bass Amplifier Head

It always takes a few minutes to find the right sound and balance. Not with the V8. All pots at 12:00 and turn up the gain and volume. After that, no need to touch it.

Description

The V8 is a class on itself. It looks good, it feels good and it sounds monstrous. Bright highs, great mids and very solid and beefy lows. Even when it is switched to half power (200W) it has plenty power to fill any stage completely.

The amp is quite rare, only aprox. 50-60 pieces were made and it is a rare occasion when a V8 is for sale. If you want one, be patient, keep looking and prepare for the worst… You might never find one.

It always takes a few minutes to find the right sound and balance. Not with the V8. All pots at 12:00 and turn up the gain and volume. After that: no need to touch it. Mint condition, The V8 is built with great quality. Powder coated chassis, neatly built interior and good quality components.

Overview

  • Design: wooden case, black vinyl cover, 3 leather carrying handles
  • Dimensions: 61 x 29 x 38 (BHT, cm)
  • Weight: 28 kg
  • Tube assembly: 8 x KT88, 7 x 12AX9, 1 x EM84
  • Power: 200/400 watts (switchable) to 2 o. 4 ohms
  • Inputs: jack (active), jack (passive)
  • Outputs: Speaker (Jack, XLR), Line Out, DI-Out
  • Sound control: bass, mids, treble, switch Bright, switch Deep
  • Effect way: 1x mono serial
  • Others: compressor (switchable), impedance switch (2/4 Ohm), power switch (full / half)

Input:

A jack input for active and passive bass. Gain 1 controls the signal strength that should be available to the preamp. The overdrive channel of the amp is activated either by pressing the push / pull Gain II potentiometer or by a footswitch . The level of the Zerre is also determined with Gain II , Level (only active in the OD mode) can be used to avoid volume jumps, or to increase or decrease the volume when the OD channel is activated.

Equalizer:

The active 3-band EQ of the amp allows boosts and attenuations in the respective frequency range. As with all V-Type devices, the sound of the V8 is rather bass emphasized, so that the Deep switch is usually disabled for the bass emphasis. The middle potentiometer is designed as a push / pull potentiometer and allows the emphasis of the mid-range when pressed, resulting in a much more transparent sound.

Compressor:

The switchable compressor of the amp is a so called “One-Knob-Comp”.  Level regulates the degree of compression, with Master the volume can be compensated. An LED indicates when the compressor is working. The compressor can be activated either by pressing the pressure switch or by a foot switch.

The back of the amp offers a lot of useful features:

Speaker Out:

The amp has a jack and an XLR output for the pit connection. Instead of the XLR-conclusion I would have liked the execution of a Speakons, as it is now almost standard. The V8 is designed for connecting a total impedance of 2 or 4 ohms. Another possibility to connect an 8 ohm box would be nice.
According to a Trace Elliot developer, however, the output transformer of the amp is sufficiently large that it should be able to withstand an impedance of 8 ohms. I have not tried it yet .
Very helpful is the Half Power Switch, with which the performance of the amp can be halved.

Output:

With a connected footswitch the compressor and the overdrive channel can be activated.
The balanced DI-Out can be tapped either before the EQ (before Gain I or Gain II ) or after the EQ / compressor (before Master ). “Groundlift” to avoid ground loops is possible by means of a pressure switch. To control a further output stage, an unbalanced jack output can be used. Here is a signal, which is tapped after the EQ.
